EUROHORCS welcomes ERAB Report “Preparing Europe for a New Renaissance”
EUROHORCs welcomes the ERAB document „Preparing Europe for a New Renaissance“. Its vision is very close to that of EUROHORCs‘ and its members look forward to engaging in more detailed discussions as EUROHORCs and ERAB develop plans to achieve the ERA. EUROHORCs is planning to present a commentary on the report ahead of the ERAB conference that will take place in May 2010.

EUROHORCs / ESF Road Map has been published
EUROHORCs and ESF have published their “Vision on a Globally Competitive ERA and their Road Map for Actions”. This document states the goals to be reached in the next five to ten years to build a European Research Area (ERA) of excellence as well as actions which should be taken by EUROHORCS and ESF member organisations to help build a globally competitive ERA.

Report Cross-border Research Cooperation in Europe is made available
A report on existing cross-border research collaboration and joint projects has been compiled. This report was produced as a follow-up action of a High-level Workshop of European research ministers and members of EUROHORCs that took place in Lisbon in January 2009. The report draws upon the data of 22 research organisations in Europe that completed an online survey and throws light on the current level of cross-border cooperation between national research organisations and researchers of different countries of the European Research Area.

European Parliament voted on EU Animals Directive
EUROHORCS welcomes the vote of the European Parliament on the revision of the directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes that took place on the 5 May 2009.

EUROHORCs Position Paper on ERC Mid-term Review
EUROHORCs gave its opinion on the European Research Council (ERC),  in the course of its mid-term review. In this statement, EUROHORCs expresses its strong support of the ERC, but also identifies challenges that need to be tackled in the future.

Election of New Steering Committee Members
Four new SC members were elected at the General Assembly meeting on 23 April 2009 in Berne, Switzerland. The new members are Ebba Nexø, (The Danish Councils for Independent Research), Frank Gannon (Science Foundation Ireland), Franci Demšar (The Slovenian Research Agency) and Luciano Maiani (The National Research Council, Italy).

New EUROHORCs Member: Leibniz Association, Germany
The Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Association, Germany has been invited to become a member of EUROHORCs. The Leibniz Association is an interest group of 86 small and medium-size independent, state-financed research institutes, covering a wide spectrum of scientific areas, from the arts and humanities and arts, social and political sciences to life science and medicine, environmental sciences and mathematics.

Letter to Neil Parish, MEP, Regarding EU Animals Directive
In March 2009 President Dieter Imboden sent a letter to Neil Parish, MEP, Chair of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. The letter draws attention to the main areas of concern of many members of EUROHORCs regarding the EU Animals Directive.
